Now that Coca-Cola is officially available in Burma (Myanmar), we have to wonder what will happen to the Burmese “knock offs” we enjoyed consuming during our visit last year.
While I never developed a taste for the most popular “Star Cola”, I was a big fan of the sweet, orange-flavored “Crusher”. A cold beverage was the perfect accompaniment to the scorching heat in Bagan or the spicy goodness of Shan noodle soup.
With this move, there are now only two countries left in the world that do not have Coca-Cola operations: Cuba and North Korea.
While Coca-Cola has not had official distribution in Burma over the past 60 years, the product was imported from neighboring Thailand. However, it was outrageously expensive – approximately 1,000 Kyat ($US 1.20) or as much as most Burmese make in an entire day.
