We hop back over the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to begin phase II of our Australian adventure, starting in buzzing Sydney! While there, we get soaked on a jet boat, visit the beautiful Blue Mountains, and climb the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Our final stop in New Zealand brings us to Paihia and the Bay of Islands, where we ring in the Christmas Holiday with some new friends at the wonderful Seabeds Hostel. While there, we also hit the beach, see the famous “Hole in the Rock”, a mini-Niagara falls, along with some more friendly dolphins!
Our penultimate stop in New Zealand takes us to the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. We station ourselves in Coromandel Town, where we take a ride on what has to be the world’s most bizarre miniature railway, visit the famous thermal sands of “hot water beach”, and marvel at the spectacular limestone formations of Cathedral Cove.
We visit the spectacular White Island marine volcano, located 30 miles off the coast of Northern New Zealand, where we explore the active crater and have a close encounter with a huge pod of playful dolphins.
We return to the North Island and lace up our hiking boots to tackle the scenic 19.4km (12 mile) Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Dubbed New Zealand’s best one-day trek, this beautiful adventure takes us past steaming, active volcanoes, glistening crater lakes, and stunning vistas.
Our good luck with the weather runs out as we get stuck in rain heading up the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Along the way, we learn more about NZ’s Gold Rush, visit an amazing blowhole, and drop in on the Monteith’s brewery.
We strap on some crampons for a walk on the Franz Josef glacier in South-Western New Zealand, taking the time to also check out the nearby Fox Glacier and Haast Pass.
In the adventure capital of the world – Queenstown, New Zealand – Erik decides to throw himself off a perfectly good bridge with a gigantic rubber band attached to his ankles. This is his story.
